Mountain Race Argentiere - Vallorcine Sunday 29th Sept 2013
Jon Fielden ran the above event in the French Alps near the Swiss border. This is what he had to say:
"First mountain race this morning. Started in Argentiere and finished in Vallorcine, near the Swiss border. Such good fun, although I can say that now as I have stopped hurting!
The start was at 1250m altitude and the finish was at 1250m altitude. The slight problem was that there was an absolute brute of a climb in the middle (the race was 10 miles long) that took you up to around 2200m, which got the old legs and lungs going.
I learned several things today:
1. Most people who run these events are built like whippets. I am not.
2. The fact that someone is built like a whippet does not always mean they can run like one.
3. When you follow someone who uses hiking poles stay alert at all times as the person using the poles often does not. Thankfully I just managed to avoid getting stuck in the gut by one.
4. I need to get so much fitter before running longer races in the mountains. They are very hard, especially the uphills.
5. Of the 205 people who started, 118 were slower than me, despite many of them being built like whippets.
6. There is nothing as beautiful as running in the mountains.
7. I have the best support crew I could ask for. Thank you Natasha.
